Today, we will look at El Roi, meaning you are a God who sees. In Genesis 16, Abram and Sarai are promised a son, but Sarai has not conceived. Rather than wait for God, Sarai comes up with her own plan. She decides Hagar (her Egyptian maidservant) will be her surrogate. When Hagar does conceive, Sarai becomes angry with her and treats her unkindly. Hagar runs away to the wilderness. She called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”
Genesis 16:13
In the wilderness, we sense that Hagar is distressed and emotionally hurt. The Angel of the Lord asks her what she is doing. Hagar says she is fleeing. The Angel of the Lord gives her instructions to return. She is promised that her son will also be a great nation. Hagar realizes God has revealed Himself to her in the wilderness, and she calls Him El Roi, which means, "You are a God who sees." God saw Hagar in her difficulty. Remember today that God knows your circumstances, too. Just as Hagar did, you can call on El Roi. He has not forgotten you. He sees you, and he loves you for who you are.
