Yesterday, our Pastor started a new series on the book of Ruth. The story of Ruth (and Naomi) is an encouraging story of God working in the details of Ruth's life to turn sorrow into joy. Ruth 1:22 is a verse with a small detail that most people would read right over and not notice, but it's a very important detail in this story. Ruth 1:22 says, "They came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest." One small detail makes a big difference in this story. If they had arrived at a different time, Ruth might not have met Boaz, who would become her husband. So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the country of Moab. They came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
Ruth 1:22
This small detail about the timing of Ruth and Naomi's return changes this story from sadness to restoration and shows us how God works in the details. About 20 years ago, my mom was at church on a Sunday night. She was talking with friends and greeting visitors. This evening, she met a visiting couple who attended another local church (the church didn't have a Sunday night service). They told her about this new Presbyterian church they attended. It was a nice talk, but it wouldn't even be remembered or repeated for most of us. Later, my mom tells me about meeting this couple and the new church. My husband and I had been looking for a new church, and my mom knew I was interested in a Presbyterian church. The next Sunday, my husband and I visited that church. We loved it and would become members there for many years. The short conversation that seemed like small talk in the church lobby was life-changing for me. After we started attending this new church, we met other people and families (including the couple my mom met). We met another couple who were foster parents. They encouraged us to consider becoming foster parents, and we did. Over time, we adopted three children through foster care. I don't know if we ever would have become foster parents and adopted our three amazing children if we had not attended this church and met these families. Small details make a big difference. When we return to Ruth 1:22, we see God working in the details of Ruth's life even when it seems like nothing is happening. The Book of Ruth is a beautiful story of how God works in the details. Just as God worked in Ruth's life, we can trust that He is working in our lives, in the small and overlooked details to weave together our story, too.
